<description>CEI is a local office equipment provider with a really cool logo -- a Transformers-type robot named Raster. Raster was developed some years ago by the very talented animators at Centerline Digital, and has featured on television ads, truck wraps, the CEI website, and more.

In late 2011, CEI asked Centerline to create a new commercial highlighting Raster's all-in-one agility (versus competitors' products, which typically involve several specialized machines). The lead animator, Derick Childress, and I decided that it would be fun to pit Raster against a bulkier, slower competitor, who we named Offset.

In the 30-second spot, Raster and Offset face off in a boxing ring. Initially we thought it would be fun to have Raster and Offset fire paper, ink, and other office accoutrement at one another, but in the interest of time, we decided simply to show Raster as a fast, sleek machine compared to Offset's awkward, outdated, multi-part build.

And, come on. Who doesn't like fighting robots?

<description>In early March 2012, the hashtag "#tomyunbornchild" became a worldwide trend on Twitter. By and large, these tweets were loving, hopeful messages to the next generation -- but many people saw it as an opportunity to express hate speech towards LGBT children.

Reading their bile, the only thing I could think was: how would we feel if we heard actual parents saying this to actual children?

I got the idea on a Thursday. By Sunday, we -- me, my boyfriend, and whatever friends we could find to help us -- had it filmed.

When the video hit YouTube, it was picked up by dozens of blogs and news sources, including The Huffington Post, The Sundance Channel, Equalitopia, Instinct Magazine, Towleroad, and The Daily Dot. It was The Daily What's PSA of the Day and was retweeted by Dan Savage.

The video was posted on April 3; by April 6, it had achieved 50,000 views. Attention slowed soon after, but a small, steady number of clicks helped #tomyunbornchild reach 100,000 views in early June. It has been translated into Spanish and Polish, and will soon be featured at a United Church of Canada national event in Toronto.

Not bad for a first try.

<description>In late 2010, a friend and former coworker of mine, a very talented graphic designer named Adam Hajnos (that's "Hay-nose"), approached me about writing copy for a freelance project he'd been working on. The client was the Outreach and Advocacy, Sexuality Information for Students (OASIS) program at East Tennessee State University, and Adam didn't get very far in describing the project before I enthusiastically agreed to help.

I'll let Adam give most of the details about this project; the short version is that OASIS wanted to drum up interest for their annual "Love Your Body" day at the school. What better way to do that than with large photographs of beautiful, real women in their element -- and a little compelling, thought-provoking copy to get people talking?

It worked. Adam Hajnos and James Fay of Flying Rooster -- with guest copywriter Charlotte Moore -- won a 2011 Silver Addy Award for a public service campaign. We were very proud!

<description>This was a pro bono project, and with good reason: ShelterBox is a wonderful organization that delivers critical aid to families coping with disaster.

While ShelterBox already has a fully developed website, they wanted a deliverable that would thank donors for making a contribution. More than simple validation, this piece would be a kind of condensed FAQ for donors curious about next steps.

I loved working on this project. Loved, loved, loved it. While technical writing presents its own interesting challenges, I am always grateful for an opportunity to write something meaningful and sincere.

Ultimately, we decided to split the piece into two videos: one for donors contributing to the ShelterBox general fund, and one for donors who had sponsored a particular box. While there are only minor variations between each video, our animator did such gorgeous work, I'm including both pieces. (I think my favorite moment is in the General Fund video, when we see pack animals juxtaposed with bent-backed aid workers delivering boxes under the stars.)

We all felt very proud to have been involved with this project. The client loved the result!

<description>My first official writing job came at the end of 2006, when I volunteered to write a newsletter for the cafe where I worked. After that, it wasn't hard to talk my way out of my barista's vest and into the office. (I can be very persuasive. And by "persuasive," I mean "irritating.")

Since then, I have written e-newsletters, coupons, fliers, and brochures. I have written for print, radio, TV, and the web; I have proofread annual reports and employee handbooks alike. A shortlist of clients includes IBM, Google, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina, Subway restaurants, UNC Health Care, ShelterBox, CEI, Empire Eats, the North Carolina Aquariums, and the Thad and Alice Eure Walk for Hope.

Here's a quick look at some of my print work:

I love asking questions. I love knowing things. I have written about computers, tides, diamondback rattlesnakes, disaster relief, and North Carolina barbecue. Nothing is off-limits. Curiosity and versatility are my two greatest assets.

<description>IBM wanted to create a short, compelling teaser trailer for their Fall 2011 event on business agility. Instead of a voice over, the video would rely on dynamic, immersive imagery to keep the audience engaged. It was a bit of a tricky balance -- and on top of that, it was my first time directing a shoot. (All of the video was shot on a windy day in downtown Raleigh.)

The central idea of this piece is that social media isn't just a one-off tool we use once in a while -- it has integrated with the real world in some very fundamental ways. So what if it literally augmented our reality?

It turns out I didn't need to worry about the creative tightrope we were walking: the client was very happy with the end result! (So were we.)

IBM makes all kinds of cool stuff that reminds you that you're living in The Future -- and even though this isn't one of their most sophisticated pieces of technology, it was still fun to learn and write about.

As usual, our animator totally rocked it. Paper. So much paper. Make the paper go away!

<description>Every once in a while, I'll get assigned a script that reminds me why what I do is so much fun. It's not necessarily that the language itself is all that different from what I usually write -- but sometimes, in the course of my background research, I'll find myself going, "This thing is really cool! Why didn't anyone tell me about this before?"

Measurement Lab was one of those projects. Although our client was technically Google, theirs was only one of many hands in this particular pot. I really enjoyed learning about the genesis of this project, and of the consortium of thinkers, businesses, and sponsors who helped it come to fruition.

My friend and coworker Nick Heim (now of Junction Road Pictures) did the voice over for our video, making this just that much more fun.

<description>I do a lot of customer reference videos. Like, a lot. Some have distinct personalities; others require a little extra creativity.

My favorite kind of customer reference video is the kind where the customer's own voice narrates a start-to-finish, animated story (versus the more standard "talking head" pieces, which have their own merit and voice). These have a warmth and sincerity that really appeal to me.

This particular customer was a lot of fun to interview. Not only was she friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic about her product, but she had lots of great anecdotes to tell -- so many, in fact, that we couldn't use them all! (Ask me about "connectivity spaghetti" some time!)
